X-rays generated in the illumination system penetrate through the edge of conventional condenser apertures, causing an excess X-ray background (hole count) which prevents measurement of small quantities of characteristic X-radiation from the specimen.
These special thick platinum apertures are found to reduce the X-ray background significantly. Manufactured from a platinum/iridium alloy 95:5%.
